With numbered access-list, you can add a new rule onto it but if you want to remove it from the list, you end up removing the whole list. I got caught with this while helping my other half in configuring his office network. His office network went down for a while but up again after the router was restarted/power cycled (AS LONG AS the running-config file has not been saved yet, if it has then you have to set the router to the default config). When the router is restarted, it reverts back to the start-up config.
With named access-list, you can add/remove rule(s) at any time without having to drop the whole list.
